Bacopa monnieri (also commonly known as bacopa and brahmi) is a widely known herb in traditional Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine, used for various indications but most well recognised for its memory enhancing and cognitive benefits.
Bacopa is frequently mentioned in the religious, social and medical treatises of India since the period of Vedic civilization roughly 1500 BC. Its antiquity can be traced to the time of Athar Ved (C.800 BC) where bacopa finds a mention in the very first richa of the third chapter of Athar Samhita (3.1).
Later it also found a place in the compilation of teachings of the ancient Persian prophet Zoroaster (the founder of the Zorastrian religion), i.e., Zend Avesta (c. 600 BC).
More recently, the government of India has recognized bacopa for its potential benefits by releasing a postal stamp featuring the herb.
While bacopa has been reported to have many actions, its memory enhancing effects and benefits in learning have attracted the most attention in more recent years.
Bacopa contains several bacosides but Bacoside A and Bacoside B are the key components (amongst others) believed to be essential for the clinical efficacy of the product.
There is however great variation in the quality of Bacopa monnieri supplements now available. KeenMind contains a special extract called CDRI 08™ which is made from the plant Bacopa monnieri. CDRI 08™ has been developed and researched over many years. KeenMind is the exact bacopa product used in many of the positive clinical trials and scientific studies published to date so users can be confident of attaining the same benefits that have been identified in these studies.
